What are the Property Taxes in Texas by County?

Property Taxes in Texas by County
Property Taxes in Texas by County
Josh Rapaport
November 29, 2023

Property Taxes in Texas by County vary because each of the 254 counties has its own method of assessing and collecting taxes.

Texas Property Tax Rates depends on the county you live in as well as various factors such as local policies and property values.

The median property tax rate in Texas is approximately $2,275.00 per year for a home worth the median value of $125,800.00, which averages to 1.81% of the property’s assessed fair market value.

King County has the highest property tax, averaging $5,066.00 (1.56% of median home value), while Terrell County has the lowest at about $285.00 (0.67% of median home value).

Who Determines My Property Tax Rate in Texas?

Local governments set tax rates and collect property taxes to provide local services such as schools, streets, roads, police, fire protection, and more.

Texas itself has no state property tax.

Your locally elected officials (school trustees, city council members, county commissioners) determine your property tax burden.

The Texas Legislature does not set the tax amount of your local taxes nor does your local appraisal district.

How is My Texas Property Tax Bill Calculated?

Multiple taxing units like your school district, county, and city tax each property.

Most taxpayers will get only one bill from the local assessor-collector that combines the taxes owed to each taxing unit.

For property owners with a mortgage, the tax bill will be sent to your mortgage company to be paid from your escrow account.
